You can use Word of Mouth in the Day-to-Day Building of your Restaurant's Reputation - 08/24/2009It is important that you understand that Word of Mouth Advertising should actually be part of your Marketing plan. You can use Word of Mouth in the day-to-day building of your Restaurant's reputation. Word of Mouth can become a powerful Marketing tool. Let me give you an example: One night after a ball game we decided to visit a new hamburger specialty restaurant that had opened in our city. They featured a half pound burger. The server approached our table and stated: "This looks like a hungry group." She looked me right in the eye and I responded, "I'M STARVING. Give me one of those half pound burgers medium-rare." "Do you like Swiss Cheese?", the server asked. I responded,"I love it!" She continued, "And how about crisp bacon and sauteed mushrooms? We use large, freshly sliced button mushrooms sauteed to perfection. This burger is not on the menu, but it is my favorite." "That really sounds delicious." I liked this server's approach. "So that's a juicy half pounder, cooked medium rare, topped with crisp bacon, sauteed mushrooms and melted Swiss cheese. That sounds good doesn't it." ... "May I recommend either french fries or home-made onion rings to go with the burger? We make our own onion rings served with a special sauce." I ordered the onion rings and asked for a glass of water. "Clearly Canadian Spring Water or House Water?", she asked with a smile. "We have raspberry, peach, kiwi and strawberry flavors on the Clearly Canadian." "What is the house water?", I asked. "Tap water," she responded with a smile. I ordered the peach Clearly Canadian and was satisfied. The server did such a good job of selling me that the other five people at our table ordered exactly the same thing I did. - We had just experienced "WOW, Exceptional Service!" In my mind's eye I could actually see that big, juicy, bacon, mushroom burger with Swiss cheese melting all over it as she described it and so could my friends. She was a super server. She wanted to ensure that we had the very finest eating experience ... and we did. As the server recorded the burgers for my friends on the Guest check, she heard several comments about how hungry they were and she suggested: "For those of you that are really hungry, we have home-made green chili that goes fabulous with our burgers. I like to dip my burger right into the green chili. It's my favorite way to eat our burgers. Would any of you like to try it?" Four of the six people ordered the green chili and agreed with the server. The chili was spiced just right and flavorful. It was fabulous with the burger. The burgers were juicy, gooey and delicious; the onion rings were extra-ordinary and the special sauce was superb. The Clearly Canadian peach-flavored spring water complemented the food. We had a wonderful "WOW, Exceptional Service!" experience. Now we paid more than we had originally planned to spend, but it was well worth it. Everything was absolutely delicious. We felt we got a great value and the server provided outstanding hospitality. It was fun to eat there, we would go back often and we would tell our family and friends about it.
